The Microfibre Consortium (TMC) is a research-led sustainable textiles NGO, working to convene the global textiles sector through The Microfibre 2030 Commitment and Roadmap. It is the first and only organisation whole-heartedly focused on this topic and works on behalf of its signatories which comprises of brands and retailers, researchers and affiliated organisations. TMC’s signatory base represents the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, amongst others. Its global remit ensures that the clothing industry delivering to a wide and diverse consumer base, can be consistent with its implementation of mitigation measures relating to unintentional fibre fragmentation and microfibre pollution (both synthetic and natural) through actions such as:

  • developing root cause understanding and solutions
  • driving an aligned commitment
  • delivering sustained action and measurable impact

Our Partnership with TMC

ZDHC and TMC formalised their collaboration in May 2021, and ZDHC is represented on the Microfibre 2030 Commitment advisory group. We work together, combining the expertise of ZDHC in sustainable chemical management with the science-led knowledge of fibre fragmentation from The Microfibre Consortium team to develop science-based solutions for the textile industry to minimise fibre fragmentation and release to the environment during textile manufacturing and the product life cycle.

TMC offers a range of online training exclusively via the ZDHC Academy Platform related to fibre fragmentation in wastewater. Training topics include:

  • Module 1: Introduction to The Microfibre Consortium
  • Module 2: Introduction to fibre fragments in wastewater
  • Module 3: Process & guidance of direct discharge effluent treatment
  • Module 4: sampling and testing possibilities

The objective of this basic level training is to understand fibre fragmentation during textile manufacturing, and the different methods available of mitigating the problem.
