The World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) is a global platform that unites individuals, institutions, and organisations from across the world to promote and advance environmental education.
Since its inception in 2003, WEEC has grown into one of the most significant forums for educators, policymakers, and practitioners to share knowledge, experiences, and innovative practices in the field of environmental education.
To date, the WEEC has hosted 11 world congresses, attracting thousands of professionals from over 100 countries. In collaboration with the United Nations and its agencies, including UNEP and UNESCO, WEEC works alongside educational, research, cultural, and scientific organisations at international, national, regional, and local levels to foster environmental education.
The WEEC, held biennially, provides a space where diverse voices from various sectors—academia, government, NGOs, businesses, and civil society—can converge to tackle pressing environmental issues through education. The overarching goal of the WEEC is to build a more sustainable and environmentally conscious global society by fostering environmental literacy and promoting sustainable practices.
The broad scope of the WEEC, which includes such topics as sustainable development, green economy & environmental justice, allows the congress to address environmental education from various angles. Thus, incorporating scientific, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability.
In an era of escalating environmental crises such as climate change, habitat destruction, and pollution, the WEEC serves as a vital hub for galvanising collective action. Its global reach and ability to facilitate international collaboration make it uniquely positioned to shape the future of environmental education by exploring and refining new pedagogical ideas and practices.
At a side event during this past year's WEEC conference, ZDHC Academy, in collaboration with Ritex and ITS Cosmo, brought together scholars, educational institutions, and government representatives from the private sector to engage in open discussions on environmental initiatives. The event identified key challenges in bridging the gap between industry and higher education whilst exploring key factors that appeared to facilitate closing this gap. In the aftermath of the conference WEEC and ZDHC Academy have continued fruitful discussions about possible collaborations in the years to come, focussing on events, student and professor engagement and building bridges between the academic world and the industry sector.
